There are many occasions when a woman may prefer to see a female doctor. This article explores four occasions when you may wish to request a female GP. Read on to find out more!
1. You have a gynaecological issue
Your doctor is responsible for all things related to your reproductive health. This includes managing menstrual pain, heavy periods, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), PMT, endometriosis, and ovarian cysts. If you are worried about speaking to a male about any of these issues, it may be wise to request a female doctor. After all, some women feel more comfortable discussing sensitive issues with another woman, particularly if they're concerned about potential embarrassment.
2. You are pregnant
Women are usually offered a choice of whose practice they would like to attend during pregnancy. Some prefer to see the same doctor throughout their pregnancy. Others request a female doctor for at least some of their appointments. You may select this option if you feel that it will be reassuring to have a woman in charge of your care when giving birth. Pregnancy itself is a sensitive time, and many women find it helpful knowing that another woman is looking after them through what can sometimes be a challenging experience. Feel free to discuss your reasons with your GP or midwife - they will understand why you'd feel more comfortable being looked after by someone of the same gender.
3. You have been sexually assaulted
If a male has sexually assaulted you, you might feel more comfortable with a female doctor as being intimately examined by a male could trigger flashbacks, resulting in further trauma. There is no right or wrong answer in this situation — it is your choice who examines you, and the medical staff will respect your preference.
4. You wish to see a female doctor for religious or cultural reasons
Some religions stipulate that only a female doctor should be allowed to conduct intimate examinations of women, regardless of whether or not the issue is related to gynaecological conditions. For example, some branches of Islam teach that men aren't allowed to see an unrelated (non-family) woman's body unless fully clothed with her modesty preserved. This means that some women prefer only seeing female doctors in order to avoid unnecessary embarrassment.
Please mention it to the receptionist when booking your next appointment if you want to see a female GP. Staff at your local medical centre should do all they can to ensure your request is fulfilled.
